This breed of dog is becoming ever more popular.
Shar-peis are friendly and loyal to their family but wary of strangers as they were used for guarding many years ago and can still carry this trait. They are an intelligent breed, trainable and respond well to a calm approach. The rescue shar-pei may have had a bad start in life and new owners will need to be understanding and patient as they are a sensitive breed.
They can be costly when it comes to medical issues as they do suffer with eye, ear and skin problems and would more then likely need to have at least one operation.
There are two different coat types that may affect the skin, the HORSE coat is short and coarse and can become sore at times which can also cause an allergic reaction in some people causing a rash, the BRUSH coat is a little longer and soft to the touch.
It is very important that when you are considering this breed that you find out as much information as possible which will help you to make that decision.
